Artist Statement

My favourite themes and subject matter are captured primarily from the Canadian landscape, where I feel most at home. I am captivated by water and its relevance often flows through my work. Natural light, strong compositions and nostalgic moments all inspire me. I enjoy teasing out unexpected colours and textures in order to make my work more engaging to the viewer. While I primarily paint in the studio from photos I have taken, I also enjoy the challenge of painting en plein air. Creating depth by working through many layers, my brushstrokes are often quick and spontaneous because I love the unexpected results that can occur.

The quiet solitude of painting helps to keep me present and grounded in other facets of my life, though I became fond of painting alongside other artists as I worked on my Bachelor of Studio Arts from Brock University. The most rewarding creative experiences for me, by far, have been teaching other artists the skills they need to develop their own passion for painting and art-making.

My studio and teaching space, Robin’s Song, is located on the northern shore of Lake Erie in Port Colborne, Ontario.
